BELIEFS FOR A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Growing up, I was exposed to various family traditions to attract a prosperous New Year. It was a fun experience to observe the long held traditions especially on the preparation process.

Today, I will be sharing some of our Filipino Family Traditions to usher the coming year. On top of that, I will be sharing some funny (FYI: unreal) beliefs that come in my mind.

So before the year of the dragon waltz in, take a read on how to attract good vibes, good health and a happy life. It's time to go, raaaawr (the dragon way)!

MY 2011

2011 is the year that I come out of my comfort zone.

I’ve tried places that I’ve never been to. I’ve faced challenges that put my faith in God to the test. Indeed, this year is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs.

Despite the challenges that I’ve had for this year, I am thankful that 2011 has been very good to me. I’ve had my share of triumphs this year. More or more, it's a fruitful year.

In this post, I won’t be serious. For that, I am throwing my personal award-awardan moment.

EXCLUSIVE: PAMASKONG HANDOG WITH YENG CONSTANTINO

Yesterday, the whole world celebrated Christmas. Most of the time were spent on get together with family and friends. Gift giving and a stretch of festive dining pampered each and everyone.

Here in Brunei Darussalam, a special gift delighted the many Overseas Filipino Workers who weren’t given a chance to go back to the Philippines to spent the holidays. I was one of the many OFWs who were in Brunei to celebrate Christmas.

Believe it or not, Yeng Constantino, the first grand winner of Pinoy Dream Academy, had her concert in the Abode of Peace.

IT'S (ALMOST) CHRISTMAS!

It's that time of the year again when the whole world celebrates a day of Jesus Christ's birth, Christmas. Okay. While everyone is just uber busy on preparing for either the Christmas Eve mass or some family reunion on Christmas Eve or on the 25th, I am also busy preparing myself for my 4th Christmas in Brunei. Unimaginably, this is my, yes, 4th Christmas celebration in the abode of peace. As you all know, I never had the chance to go back in the Philippines for the past years on Christmas time because my leave is always scheduled on April or May, which is the summer season in the Philippines.

So how does it go to celebrate Christmas in Brunei, especially that I'm single and away from my family? Read on to extract more kadramahan. Yes, this is a MMK story telling. Nah. No lah. Lah. Lah.

ON LEAVING AND FINDING A NEW ADVENTURE!

It has been months now since I start to contemplate on where do I see myself for the next years of my life, say, two years from now. With this, I've been asking a lot of signs from God. Plus, at night, I never miss to pray and ask for guidance. Finally, God has given me a hint on where I should head after my adventures in Brunei.

I am ready to open a new chapter of my life.

A STRING OF HOLIDAY CHEERS AND TEARS!

Yesterday, I was absent at work. With the back-aching and throat-harassing activities that I had for the past weeks in preparation for Brunei's Who's Got Talent Season 3, my body finally complained. I got sick. I had a sore throat and yes, I got a bit of coughing. So, to not make things worse, I sought after a doctor and I was asked to take a bed rest. Thankfully, now, I'm feeling gooooood. The medicines, bed rest and gallons of water worked for my recovery.

As I was resting yesterday, I realized that I've been receiving a lot of blessings from God. And these blessings just come in perfect timing especially on helping me decide on things that confuse my life right now.

After weeks of voting and a night of the Semi-finals round, finally, the TOP 4 best performances were crowned in Brunei's Who's Got Talent Season 3! The news is, I didn't win. But even if I didn't win, I was just so haaaaaapppy with my performance because I knew that I gave my best and I really owned the stage.

Second, if we get in to the grand finals, we have to perform two songs: one is the song from the artist that we picked and one song of our choice.

FOR THAT ONE SPECIAL WOMAN IN MY LIFE

I was 24 when you left me in this world. I was devastated with your leaving. We, your family, were in awe when God decided to take you away you from us. We didn't have a choice. It was brought about by fate.

But if there's any lesson that I learned from your sudden departure, that is living our lives with so much love and strength.Today, I want to bring back the happy old times that we shared.

TIPS AND TRICKS IN TAKING IELTS

Two weeks ago, I took the IELTS test. I had to take the exam as a requirement in Postgrad Studies overseas.

Despite the time-pressured and mind-shaking examination, I was able to pass the test. Finally, my anxiety ended as soon as I opened the brown envelop and my scores in the test flew in thin air.

So today, I will share to you some tips and tricks to ace the IELTS test. Of course, my statements will be based on my personal experiences.

FASHION 101: FROM ZERO TO HERO!

My officemates Soc and Jomai have been very supportive of me on my Who's Got Talent journey. That's evident from the moment I told them about my plan to go for a glam rock look or Adam Lambert-ish vibe; they've started looking for pictures online to doll me up!

So yesterday, we were all out to not only dine in a budget-friendly restaurant and celebrate my achievement in passing the IELTS test, we hunt for clothes that will help me achieve my glam rock fashion ensemble.

I AM LOVED

I can't believe that I am turning 30 next year. Okay, I have few months left before I officially bid farewell to my 20's! Interestingly, despite the disbelief, I am happy with the kind of life that I've lived for the past years.

Let me share to you some of my deep thoughts on my life ranging from the serious up to the daring aspect.

THE REASONS WHY I SHOULD STOP WATCHING HORROR FLICKS/SERIES

I love watching horror movies. That's back when I was in the Philippines. But now that I live alone in Brunei Darussalam, I seldom catch horror flicks. Most of the time, to satiate my longing for eerie narratives, I just watch Filipino horror movies. Filipino movies are tolerable in giving me a fright.

But when my dad had his vacation here just last week, I gave in to watch some foreign horror movies. I was confident that I won't be scared if my dad is beside me. Surprisingly, the effect is just bad.

NIGHT OUT WITH FRIENDS

For the past days, apart from binge eating, my Father and I had loads of fun times with my friends. TOURING BRUNEI AT NIGHT

FATHER AND SON BONDING 2011!

My Father is in Brunei Darussalam. Believe it or not, his current visit is his 3rd time. Obviously, with my (close to) fourth year stay in the abode of peace, as relative to his visits, it can be argued that my Father's vacation is made annually! Bongga naman di ba!

I am very happy whenever my father visits me and stays for a couple of days. Apart from bringing some Philippine made items that I really miss such as Chocnut, Goldilocks Polvoron, even Flat Tops and Quaker Oats Cookies, my Father's visit rejuvenates me to (for a time) bash homesickness. Plus, I enjoy our conversations over lunch, dinner and before hitting the sack.

In his recent visit, my Father and I have had a few trailblazing activities which are different from his previous visit. Wanna know the chika? Read on!

TOP 10 JUST FOR LAUGHS ACCIDENT SCENE STEALER

Things have been crazy for the past weeks. One of major reasons for my pagkabusy is the preparation that I'm doing for my PhD Application; there's self review of IELTS, researching of related literature, communication theory reading, and research proposal making. Of course, the priority is to at least get a 7 Band Score in IELTS for me to qualify in Universities overseas.

I won't talk about my academic eklavu, but I will share to you the bonggang bonggang scene stealer (s) on the night I had an accident. Yes, just for laughs!

So how's your weekend? How's mine? Well, apart from being so busy in reviewing for my upcoming IELTS exam, which I had to pass so that I will be able to take a PhD, I've been busy with my choir's upcoming concert. But despite my busy schedule, I was able to perform on stage at Brunei Hotel last Saturday. I was invited by my friend to perform for the halloween event of the newly-renovated hotel.

DISCOMFORT IN TOO MUCH COMFORT

Two weeks from now, All Soul's Day rolls out in the calendar. During this time of the year, it's inevitable to ignore the scare fest that frightens our busy mortal world. Halloween parties are eventually to mushroom. Television channels will be filled with gore and eerie movies. Gargantuan malls will be overhauled with haunted decors. For whatever the price we pay or do to observe or enjoy the hype on All Soul's day, nothing could be more haunting but to scare ourselves with pondering on our greatest fears, filling in chit chat with ghost stories, and scaring ourselves out through venturing into phobia-busting activities.

I am deviating. Allow me to be a bit sentimental.

HALO-HALO IN BRUNEI

Who would have thought that the Philippines' ever popular Halo-halo could be found in Brunei? Okay. I should not be surprised especially in this time of globalization, the flow of products (human, services, and goods) just come and go in different territories.

So how's the taste of the Halo-Halo? Well, lasang halo-halo (Vice Ganda lang). But there's a catch.

"paLEGOhan"

FAB FAVES

Now that graduate school work is over, strolling at the nearest mall on Saturday afternoons has become my past time. And just recently, I visited one of my favourite bookstores in Brunei and I found out that it had some major (major) makeover. On the side, I treated myself with some irresistible dish, which was introduced to me by my friend Elna.

(SOCIAL) MARKETING MYSELF

The competition has begun and I’ve already started my strategy on getting votes. As a person who works in the media industry- from PR to advertising and broadcast media – I try to put myself on a sort of social experiment. Yes, I am marketing myself. Of course, the Brunei’s Who’s Got talent is one of the platform to execute.

FASTFOOD FEST!

I’m not a fan of fastfood meals. However, last Saturday, I craved for a cheeseburger, McFlurry and fries. So, together with my officemate, I walked in at the one and only McDonald’s branch in Brunei.

But there's something surprising about dining in at McDonald's. There was a unique twist on their meal!

RECENT RANDOM TOP 10 EKLAVU!

Things have become rocky over the past days. Now that I'm done with my Master's thesis, I am free from all the stressful nights of studying. Apparently, as it turns out, I've not yet escaped the rigors of composing a research proposal in mind. That's because I'm planning to take my PhD in 2012. As a requirement, I am to submit a proposal.

But of course, life is not only about drowning yourself with a pile of books and burning the midnight oil. Thanks to more free time, I can reflect on which direction I would like to bring my life in 2012. Love life? Career change? Travels?

"HE SAID, SHE SAID" KIND OF SONG IN BRUNEI

I love music. I appreciate any kind of musical genre ranging from pop, classical, techno, and even some ear-splitting rock pieces.  While there may be variety in forms and melodies, music is simply a food for the soul.

Apparently, over the past months, I kept on hearing a song here in Brunei which I find funny, weird and scary. The song has been playing over the radio, in the morning, afternoon, and even at night. With that, I really can't help but notice it. So with so much curiosity, I searched the song in Youtube.

Wanna know song (s)? Then read on!

PARTY FOR KIDS (AT HEART)

Last Sunday, I attended the 7th Birthday celebration of Roj, the son my friends, Dr. Rommel Curaming and Ms. Lea. The celebration was held at Pangsa Mar'azmala, where the Curaming family resides. Yours truly hosted the event.

There is something special about attending or hosting a children's party. Not only it reminds me how I celebrated my birthday when I was growing up. It also allows me to be a kid, once again. Yes, that's because of the wide-array of games that one could enjoy in participating. But since I was the host of the event, I set the party on fire!

OPEN HOUSE, A SWEET FEAST WITH A TWIST!

Last night, my friend, Senor Pablo, who I met in my event launch of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Times Square, invited me to come over to their Open house. As you all know, an Open House is an Eid Celebration wherein Muslims invite relatives, friends, neighbors and acquaintances to dine at their house. Traditionally, guest come over wearing their baju kurung (For Female) and baju melayu (For Male). But for non-Muslims, wearing a comfortable clothing (insert: wholesome) is recommended.

WHERE TO? TOP 10 JOBS I WOULD LOVE TO DO!

There is no denying that time flies really fast. At this time of last year, I was juggling two of Master’s classes, my work and my social life. Now, unimaginably, I’m already done with my masters or graduate studies. With hardwork and premium dedication, I finished my research with a heart warming feedback from my adviser.

Now that I’m done with graduate studies, I can’t help but contemplate on where should I bring the skills that I’ve acquired from a 2-year and a half of specialization. In my mind, with a degree in Development Communication, I am thinking of venturing into career options that enable the application of skills and new knowledge. On top of my list is teaching in a University or work in United Nations or any International Organization.

Setting aside my serious side and before I jump into taking a PhD, I reflected on the past years of sleepless nights in graduate school and I came up with the TOP 10 jobs which I’d possibly love to do if I am not an advertising copywriter, or would become a future Professor or communication specialist.

LES MISERABLES IN BRUNEI!

Just when I thought that my days would drown in a monotonous and dragging phase, a special surprise knocks in my door. Just last week, Kuya Lito, my choirmate in COLA Church, asked me if I can join another chorale group.  This time, the group is composed mostly of expats, who are trained in chorale performances. Interestingly, the group is known for their performances every year; they do concerts, twice a year!

Without hesitation, and since I wanted to try something different that would increase my skills in singing, I said yes to Kuya Lito. And just last night, I attended the practice.

OPEN HOUSE, A HEART WARMING SURPRISE!

It has been a tradition during the Hari Raya festivities for Muslims to invite their relatives, friends, colleagues and even neighborz to their "Open House." An Open House is similar to a house party wherein invited guests can come, eat and share the merriment of the host family. Believe it or not, most guests visit more than one Open house in a day.

As of writing, most of my friends right now are enjoying the different and even ostentatious feast of the Muslim population. Apparently, on my side, I haven't experienced any Open House. First, I don't get invites from Muslim friends because I have few Muslim acquaintances. In our company alone, we only have one Muslim staff. And for that Muslim officemate of mine, he opts to do Open House only for their family and close relatives. On one hand, since I seldom stay in the staff house, I don't get to meet the Muslim family around. Despite this one time when my father met our neighbor, the relationship was not sustained for I really don't go out of my crib. Hence, with my exposure to the people around and the situation I'm in, I don't get invites in an Open House.

Luckily, I got one unique invitation. It is the kind of invitation that surprised me, despite the heads up on a scrumptious meal.

Wanna know that invite? Read on!

SELAMAT HARI RAYA 2011

It has been a long, productive and fun day for me today. Apart from rolling out the Master Chef in me in the kitchen this morning, I've finally finished the book (not school related) that I've been enjoying for the past days, and I have fun at Pangsa Mar'azmala, courtesy of Ma'am Betsy.

As you all know, Brunei is celebrating its first day of Hari Raya today. With that, the whole country is set in a festive holiday. And for foreigners like us, this day doesn't only mark the festive season. It is also a special day to unwind and relax for it's a non-working holiday, which is set in two days.

Wanna know more about my first day Hari Raya adventures? Read on.

BULALAKAW (FICTION)

Korona

IT'S MR.8 BURGER!

When I had my vacation in the Philippines last July to conduct my MA Thesis research, one of the gastronomic adventures I had was a stop over at Mr. 8 Burger after a whole day of mind-cracking research at UP Diliman.  Opened in 2010, Mr. 8 Burger is located at 88 Maginhawa Street Teachers Village, Quezon City.

It was sunny afternoon when I decided to stop by and meet my college friends at Mr. 8 burger. Good thing, it was very accessible. With just one ride of the ever popular tricycle  at Philcoa, I reached the cozy place in 15 minutes.

OH TOKYO & L.A.

Back in 2000, I used to watch an information program in cable. The title of the show was "Oh Tokyo!" It's a Japanese-Filipino produced show that was aired by WINS cable television show at skycable. Interestingly, little did I know, the anchor of the show is known as Ellen Legasto Nishuimi.

Honestly, there is something about Ellen Legasto Nishumi which really glued me on television. It's not her smooth accent or the way she dressed. Perhaps, it's her pagka-Pinay that I liked the most. Plus, I felt that anytime, parang madadapa o maghaharass si Ellen dahil sa kanyang pagkapayat.

Here's more. Apart from Ellen Legasto Nishumi, while I was checking some videos in youtube, an interesting video popped out. Guess what, it's a video of a Filipino child star turned singer. I know you know him. Let me reveal it here.

PAST REVISITED: A WOW PHILIPPINES EXTRAVAGANZA

I was browsing at some of my pictures in my multiply account when I saw some travel photos that I had back in 2007 and in 2008 in the Philippines. My travels back then were sponsored by Asian Center for Foreign Languages as part of the cultural immersions which is required among foreigners who want to learn the Filipino language and get a better understanding of Filipino culture and traditions. I was a lecturer in Filipino in Asian Center for Foreign Languages in 2007.

Apart from travels with Asian Center for Foreign Language, our family had our share of tours in Palawan and Baguio.  Interestingly, it was in 2007 and 2008 that I wore a slender or a minimal-fat packed body.

Join me as we travel back in time and lay our eyes on the beauty of Philippines' sights!

CHEF FOR A DAY

It has been a tiring holiday for me. You know what's the reason. I don't have to mention it. Yes. You're right. Thanks to Graduate school, my holiday is sometimes turned into HELLiday. On a bright side, I'm done with my first draft. Meaning to say, I can now submit it for my thesis adviser's critique. Lo and behold, I am hoping that revisions would be minimal.

As of writing, I would like to share to you my very "CHEFish" day. It's a word I coined from the word "chef" and  the add on "-ish." I am just happy because today, despite my busy schedule, I put my hands on cooking pans and spices to concoct a delish and healthy meal. With experimentation in mind, I came up with a bittergourd meal (yes, ampalaya) and a dessert made of carrots. Isn't I'm uber healthy right now?

When I woke this morning, my intention was to proceed with my research work. I wanted to patch some ideas and edit some texts. Apparently, there's something about the weather that tickled my interest to go to the kitchen and cook. With a rainy day, I pulled out the pans, prepared the ingredients and started peppering magic in the kitchen.

So wanna get a glimpse of what I cooked? The word "Delish"  to describe my cuisine is an understatement. Perhaps, it's more of "Muy Delicioso!"

FASTING MONTH

It's been two weeks now since Ramadhan or the Holy Month of Fasting began. In the Sultanate, which is predominantly comprised of Muslims, most people have started to fast. In our office alone, my Muslim officemates don't eat during lunch or even drink for the whole day. Interestingly, Muslims wake up as early as 3 in the morning to pray and break their fast. Then, at night, Muslims would pray at 6 in the evening and eat right after.

Fasting or Ramadhan is a very interesting religious practice among Muslims. The way I see it, it really takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice to undergo the ritual. By merely imagining that absence of food and water intake from 6 in the morning until 6 in the evening, you may get to understand how you could look up on the tradition.

In observance of the fasting month, it is important that non-Muslims should comply accordingly. Especially for foreigners like me, being sensitive and respectful to the practices and the people are significant. In this time of Ramadhan, there are social guidelines that a non-Muslim must at least follow. Read on.

TACSIYAPO-YING TOURISM IN THE PHILIPPINES!

I've always been fascinated with the beauty of places in my home country, the Philippines; the pristine beaches are just jaw-dropping; a wide-array of restaurants have been mushrooming in an unstoppable phase; gargantuan malls are left and right; and the artistry and cultural bounty which are reflected in various historical heritages are at truly world class. Just recently, I had a "wall-smashing" experience in the Philippines!

Last July, apart from taking a visit at Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine, my family and I celebrated the birthday of my youngest brother at one of Tarlac's popular eating hub, Isdaan. Isdaan is easy to find because it is on the right side of the road, if you're on the way back to Manila.

OFF TO A WISH

The past weeks have been very life changing for me. Apart from the piling of readings to finish, the synthesis to incorporate in my MA thesis and all the theorizing and analysis, I've also been adjusting on living alone on weekends in our staff house here in Brunei; While Cecil, my best buddy in Brunei, left last week to stay for good in the Philippines, my housemates go back to their hometown on weekends. So, I'm left alone on weekends.

Living alone has its pros and cons. Apart from the goosebumps which I normally get on paranoia, living alone makes me enjoy "me" time; I can freely move in the staff house without hesitations on who is to use the kitchen or who is gonna use the toilet anytime of the day. On one hand, living alone sometimes, and most of the times, gives me the eerie feeling especially if I hear troublesome noise. Thanks to playing a loud music or watching a video at its full volume, I am able to escape the terrors of unexpected and ghoulish sounds.

The past days have been hectic for me; not because of work, but because of meeting a deadline on the submission of my MA Thesis first draft. As of writing, it is due on 15 August. Thankfully, barely breathing, I'm still on track with the research time line.

In a way, being busy makes me cope up with a life inside a metaphorical cave. I feel that living in a staff house on weekends is just someone who is thrown in an island. What's more, apart from the fact that I have no one to talk to, except on chatting with my family which happens on Sunday night, I don't have a car to use at the moment; the company car is "rosak" or in Filipino, "sira." So as much as I want to go out to buy some grocery or simply go "Jalan Jalan" or Lamierda, I just can't. On a bright side, I am able to pay a Filipino guy named Kuya Joe, who has been servicing a vehicle-deprived person like me, to bring me to places such as in the mall to do my grocery and in the church on Sundays. From the staff house to Gadong or to the church, it costs me BND3.00 or 90 pesos. I suppose it's really cheap compared to the legal taxi who may charge you with BND20.00 in one go.

As I was reflecting on living alone, the deprivation of transportation and the colossal work to finish in my MA thesis, I wandered back on the day that I made a wish in the Philippines. On the birthday of my youngest brother last 7 July, my family and I celebrated a special day at the Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag. Known for it's miraculous and wish-granting imagery, the Our Lady of Manaoag has uplifted a flickering hope upon us.

Guess what's my wish on that day? Read on.

THE AKALA MO LANG WALA NANG SLUMBOOK, PERO, MERON, MERON, MERON!

When I had my vacation-cum-research leave last July in the Philippines, I bought a very interesting piece at UP Diliman Shopping Centre. Placed on a shelf, together with all knick knacks, I found the slumbook entitled " The akala mo lang wala nang Slumbook pero meron, meron, meron!" With a captivating title, I immediately asked the girl in the counter about the price. Soon, I was already leafing through the pages of the quirky item, which is priced at 300 pesos.

Truth is, I already knew about the slumbook since last year. I've seen it in a blog by Yoshke, which I visit whenever I'm free. Unfortunately, when I searched for it last year in the Philippines, I couldn't find one. It was only this year, with a pocket of fortune and serendipity, that I am able to find and own a copy.

ENJOYING DISTANCE EDUCATION AT UP OPEN UNIVERSITY

I've been working in Brunei for more than three years now. For the past years, I can say that one of my greatest achievements as an Overseas Filipino Worker is enrolling myself in a Master's Program. Apart from saving money, my move to upgrade my skills is an investment that's truly worth a lifetime.

Believe it or not, I'm now months away from finishing my Master's degree. Because I'm interested to harness my skills in communication and media, I took Master of Development Communication.

Actually, I was already enrolled at UP Diliman in 2007. I was taking up Master of Media Studies (Major in Broadcast Media). However, my journey at Diliman was cut short when the job offer from Brunei came in. With a professor's prodding, thanks to my mentor/close friend/nanay-nanayan/idol, Dr. Arminda "Ma'am Arms" Santiago, I discovered UP Open University and took Development Communication. What's more amazing, the three subjects that I took from Diliman were credited as my elective at UP Open University. So that's the reason why I was fast tracked.

I have my reasons why I enrolled at UP Open University and took a Master's Degree. First, as I've said, I want to upgrade my skills. Second, I want to teach someday, especially in the field of Communication and Media. Third, for personal reasons, I want to use my time overseas in a productive way. Of all these, going for a Master's degree is the best choice that I made in not only battling homesickness, but also hammering the importance of higher learning and skills development.

Now, are you interested to study at UP Open University? Are you an OFW or perhaps an Expat who wants to develop one's learning and skills? Well, let me guide you! Read on!

PAIN IN MY TOES

Yesterday, I was absent in the office. I wasn't able to come to work because I had a swollen big toe in my left foot.

I was not surprised with the pain that I got in my big toe. Apparently, with the food I enjoyed back in the Philippines and the less liquid intake, yes, a GOUT said hello to my body.

I have a history of GOUT. In fact, I was 22 when I experienced the pain in my right foot. I was unable to walk in a day, which was just a hassle because I was finishing my undergraduate thesis and I was working on a school group project. Good thing, the doctor recommended a medicine which got rid of the pain immediately, and I was able to walk slowly.

I don't know if it's a coincidence that whenever I'm about to graduate in a degree, GOUT visits me. Either brought by stress, one thing is to be blamed: the unhealthy lifestyle that could is reinforced by the lack of exercise and unhealthy eating.

Have you ever experienced that pain in your big toe? Have you ever suspected that it could be a GOUT? Well, read on to learn its symptoms and how you (especially me) could avoid such ordeal!

A MOUSEPAD AND A WRIST BRACE FOR METACARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Before I went back to the Philippines last week, I was complaining with some discomfort in my right wrist. The pain has been very inconsistent. Sometimes, it's up and sometimes, it's gone. Nevertheless, whenever the discomfort attacks, I can't do anything but rest my wrist.

As I've been researching, I've associated the discomfort in my wrist as a metacarpal tunnel syndrome. I haven't consulted a doctor about this (which I intend to do on my next vacation in the Philippines). Actually I'm also scared to find out more about metacarpal tunnel syndrome. Believe it or not, some have undergone surgery because of this wrist pain.

TOO SEXY TO BE CHUBBY

I'm not gifted with a HOT and YUMMY body. In reference to a mass media's standard of hotness, a yummylicious man's body is basically composed of a perfect abs, broad shoulders, and a V-shape frame. More or more, just refer to a roster of local and foreign celebrities who flood print and broadcast media with their oozing sex appeals.

Interestingly, just recently, here in the Philippines, the Bench billboard along EDSA-Guadalupe featuring the members of the Philippine rugby team, also known as Philippine Volcanoes, in their underwear was removed. Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos agreed to take down the said sexy billboard.

As I read the thread on this issue, I had a good laugh. Why? Some Filipinos are just so creative in throwing in comments. In one of the comments that I read, it is said "Baka nagalit ang asawa ng Mayor dahil mismong si Mayor ay napalingon sa billboard ng mga lalakeng naka-underwear." Another comment also added, "Paano na ako gaganahan pumasok sa umaga," a comment coming from a gay guy.

Through reports on television, seeing the billboard and the action on removing it is somehow a great spectacle. And that made me reflect on my life as a chubby person and the rigors of what is like to live in a society that adores physical beauty.

DOWNPOUR

This is my first time to stay in the Philippines in a rainy season. Normally, I would go for a vacation during summer. However, since I have no choice but to conduct my research for my MA Thesis this July, I braved the rainy season and plunged into a wet and wild Metro Manila.

As of writing, today is just my third day in Manila. So far, I'm able to accomplish some to-do and to-buy in my list. Delving on a strict budget for vacation, I can still manage my expenses. On the side, my researching mojo is starting to roll as my global respondents, who are OFW bloggers, have finally submitted their answers to my questionnaires. Hopefully, within this week, I will be able to finalize the TOP 30 Participating OFW bloggers in my benchmark study.

I won't be talking about how hard it is to do research especially for a Master's degree. It's given. It's inevitable. However, what I want to talk about is the downpour of experiences that I'm lovin and hatin right now in Manila.

I'M IN A RELATIONSHIP, THE FRIENDSHIP TYPE

Last night, Faith, one of my supah friends in Brunei, invited me, Elna and Lisa to dine at Ligong restaurant at Empire Hotel. Known as a posh dining hub with chinese-themed interiors, Ligong restaurant was just the perfect spot to throw our robust personalities as paired with an attempt to concoct an intimate night.

Dining with Faith, Elna and Lisa has always been a much-awaited activity for me. Not only I look forward to the scrumptious cuisine that we could enjoy, I also get excited with the unpredictable stories and naughty banters that sometimes take a formal meet-up to something outrageous.

On this special evening at Ligong, yes, we talked about one of the topics that we mortals always long for - RELATIONSHIPS. As high as the ceiling of the restaurant and as red as the hanging decorations, our voices were just unstoppable. From flirtatious giggles up to eye-popping gestures, the night was just too hot to handle.

Truth is, I've been in a relationship for more than three years now. I guess, it's just time to reveal it.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER, IS IT?

Numbers affect us at different levels. If we look at the numbers in prices of commodities, high digits make us scratch our heads because of probable budget constrain. If we anticipate the result of a health test, high digits recorded as measured in the standard or normal rate would definitely make us worried; that's because a healthy lifestyle is needed to remedy health hazards. And when we speak of numbers in our age, we sometimes tend to either feel blessed because another year has passed or a bit worried that as they say, getting old just makes us closer to our end. Nevertheless, numbers affects us in different ways.

Last Saturday, I had the chance to play around with a myriad of people who care less about getting old. I was invited to attend Ms. Joanne's Birthday bash. Topped with scrumptious home-made Filipino cuisine and loads of chances to showcase one's talent over the magic sing, I was appalled to write an entry on the irrelevance of digits as we age. Is it that irrelevant or are just in denial that we're getting old?

REDEFINING THE ROLE OF A FAMILY

I've been very busy for the past days. Yes, my brain is about to explode. I can't nail this case. I demand a Recess. Sounds familiar? It is! That famous line was delivered by Tuesday Vargas, who played a role as a Nanny and possessed with the soul of an Attorney in the movie Here comes the Bride. Seriously, thesis writing is just bringing in some stress in my life right now.

If only I have my family with me here, I won't be stressed this much.

GUESS WHO'S EATING CHICKEN ASS!

COLD AFTERNOONS

It's been raining around Metro Manila. It's all over the news and in social networking sites. And for a persona living outside the Philippines, the only factor that connects oneself in the onset of a haunting rain is the nostalgia of living the experience. The idea of embracing a truth that rests on a cloud of metaphors.

ONE WISH

My semester has officially started. Yesterday, I already got the feedback of my professor in my research proposal. My research focuses on the significant role of blogging as relative to OFW welfare empowerment. For this reason, I've been contacting a lot of OFW bloggers in different countries to support my research. Plus, I've been dealing with Pinoy Expat Blog Awards (PEBA) to substantiate my research.

A PILE OF GIFTS

After the extreme partying, one of the much-awaited moments come; say hello to unwrapping the gifts.

Apart from the overwhelming birthday greetings via phone, Facebook and Twitter, I was even surprised and overjoyed to open the bunch of gifts I received last Saturday.

Wrapped in colourful and quirky gift bags, the gifts were just so adorable that I can't help but post it here.

EARVS TURNS 29!

Last Saturday, on the exact day of my birthday, I had a simple celebration at AIKO SUSHI, a japanese restaurant but offers other cuisine in an affordable buffet setup. It was held in the afternoon, around 2 to 5:30 pm.

I booked and expected 40 guests. Good thing, the restaurant gave me extras for the buffet.

So how's my party?

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: JAMMIN WITH EARVS EPISODE 10: "HERE I AM"

Yehehehey! And I must say, I can't help but make reflect sa nagdaang years of my existence sa mundo. Happy din naman dahil HERE I AM ako sa mundong ibabaw to share talent and make other people's lives truly... ang saya-saya.

At bago pa ako tuluyang magemote sa paparating kong big day, aba, aawit na muna ako ng isang espesyal na song. Yan ay i-serenade ang inyong mga puso. Ikaw man ay inlove or bitter or lutang lang, this song is for you!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: THE PHILIPPINES 113TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN BRUNEI

In conjunction with the 113th Independence Day Anniversary of the Philippines on 12 June, the Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam held a Flag Hoisting Ceremony at its newly opened Philippine Embassy Grounds at Simpang 336, Diplomatic Enclave, Kampong Kianggeh, Jalan Kebangsaan, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Prior to the Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Philippine Embassy Grounds, a special thanksgiving mass was held at the Church of our Lady Assumption in Bandar Seri Begawan.

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: JAMMIN WITH EARVS EPISODE 9: "SA KANYA"

Grabeeeeeeeeeee! With all my song performances, kayo lang ang nasa isip ko! Chos!

Gaaaaaaaaawd, I'm turning 21! Naman, naman, at naman!

Okay enough of the numbers, go na with what song number na aking kakantahin. Naku, emo at cheesy alert! Bang, bang, bang!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, A MUSICAL BY STUDIO SCENE (A REVIEW)

It is unusual to chill out on a Saturday night in Brunei with a musical extravaganza. More than the Sultanate's well-preserved conservative culture, most of the people simply shop, dine and socialize through exchange of dialogues over a cup of coffee. Surprisingly, a group of young, diverse and talented individuals made a spin off on Brunei's laid back Saturday nights; a pat on the shoulder of Studio Scene!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: JAMMIN WITH EARVS EPISODE 8: "THERE'S NO EASY WAY"

Wohohoooooo! At dahil Saturday ngayon, what a better way to start the day ay kundi ang umawit ng isang pampapaganang song.

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: INNER PEACE AND ALL THE "PIS" AROUND US!

Two weeks ago, I was able to watch the movie Kung Fu Panda 2. Because I had some extra (super extra lang naman) kabaryahan, I watched the funny flick in 3D. And believe it or not, I haven't watched the first instalment. With that, I really can't say if the Part 2 delivered best in comparison to the first one.

But one thing is for sure, I enjoyed Kung Fu Panda 2. It's as if the movie had a Filipino writer who incorporated all the visual humor and witty dialogues. OA much? O sige, muntik ng mahulog ang 3D glass. Cheeeeeka!

But, but, but, pwet, apart from the humor, the movie has helped me to ponder on the concept of Inner Peace. Yes. Kaya today, let me share to you the ways on finding Inner Peace in a different level! Itataas natin ang kahulugan ng INNER PEACE.

But of course, lalagyan natin ng twist ang INNER PEACE in our everyday life? Ang PEACE ay
maaaring PEACE, PIECE or maging PIS! Handa ka na? Game!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: JAMMIN WITH EARVS EPISODE 7: "ALIPIN"

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (A SUPAH SHORT REVIEW)

Last Saturday afternoon, I was able to watch X-Men: First Class. Truth is, I'm not a fan of Marvel comics. But since I want to watch something out of my comfort zone and I want to unwind, I went out with my friends Elna, Lisa and Kuya Rhenee.

Should I rate the movie, out of 10, I could give it ....

TOP 10 REASONS WHY IT'S SO (DEYMN!) HARD FOR FILIPINOS TO LOSE WEIGHT IN BRUNEI!

Whenever I go out of the toilet, sa laki ng salamin ko sa kuwarto, hindi ko maiwasang mapatingin sa salamin. Okay. OA naman ang Winnie the Pooh. Pero scary naman kung tipong Pong Pagong. Afraid.

Lusog Busog Shot in May 2010!
So what's my point? When I came in Brunei in 2008, I weighed (I think) 140lbs. It was my lightest timbang dahil nga kasi tabain ako. With all the stress, continuous exercise and milya milyang lakaran sa Pilipinas, pumayat talaga ako. But now that I'm in the Abode of Peace, naging at peace rin ang katawan ko and so I gained weight.

Today, paguusapan natin ang TOP 10 reasons why a Filipino could go from size 2 to size 32 (OA!) dito sa Brunei! Aminin man natin o hindi, kahit sino atang OFW (depende sa work at sa sitwasyon) ay may Paglobo syndrome. And honestly, that's my first concern whenever I go back to the Philippines to have my vacation. Little did most people know, some people gain weight because of ISHTRESS. Oo, STRESS!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: PNOY'S STATE VISIT IN BRUNEI!

As we all know, bumisita si Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino III sa Brunei Darussalam.

Days before the big event, I attended a the FilComm Meeting.

Since hindi naman ako busy that time, go na rin. And guess what, nabasa ito ng Ambassador namin.

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: JAMMIN 101 WITH EARVS PILOT EPISODE: "LOVE ALWAYS FINDS A WAY"

So, ano pang hinihintay mo, watch na! Now na!

EXPLOSIVE ENCOUNTER: 29 FACTS ABOUT EARVS

Time flies so fast. Imagine, I'm turning 29 this June 18. Yes. I am turning 29. And gaaawd, after 29, next is 30 and soon my age will be out of the calendar.

I can say na happy rin naman ang life ko for the past 29 years. I lose some weight. I gain a lot of friends. I'm earning just right. I can save. I have some investments. And more importantly, nag-mature na rin talaga ako.

I can't say na I have a perfect life. As of the moment, happy lang din naman ako. Happy in a sense na kahit hindi pa pumapasok sa relasyon, eh ayos na rin. Siguro sabi ni Lord, hindi pa right time. Darating din ang right moment and person. And I'm sure, sooooon. Yan eh base sa mga napaparamdam. Kailangan lang pumili.

In terms of career, naghahanap hanap na rin ako ng malilipatang bansa. Yes. I'm looking for a new karera sa buhay. I want a challenging one pero yung okay naman ang pay. Seriously, I am paying some investments and I can't afford to chillax o magpaka-laid back. But of course, I'm taking care naman of my health. Sabi nga eh, health is wealth.

But if you will ask me kung ano ang aking dream job, like now? To work in UN or work as a Diplomat. Dahil dyan, I'm thinking of taking the Foreign Service Exam next year. On another note, I am not giving up on becoming an On-Cam talent (hahaha). Seryoso, I want to have a talk show! hahaha!

School? Oh! Hopefully eh makagraduate na ako this sem. I am really hoping for that. And hopefully next year ay makakuha ako ng scholarship to study overseas or puede rin namang mag-Phd sa Open University. I will take a sem rest muna then sabak na ulit.
Sa ngayon, I'm contemplating on my graduation. Magtapos muna at magparty.

Since I'm turning 29, I am sharing 29 Random Facts, Goals or Habits about myself. Siempre, isama mo an rin dyan ang ka-wierduhan. Now, let's start the ball rolling. Game!
